It was the pain that brought Bile back to the world of the living. His left eye, the one eye that wasn't swollen and burned, slowly opened up, and everything was so bright around him. What... What was going on? Where was he, even? Everything hurt so bad. Everything except his right ar-
His head rolled to the right, and there was nothing past the shoulder but a jagged piece of bone. Oh.. so that was why it didn't hurt. The explosion... for some miraculous reason, he was still alive. And... in a surprisingly soft area.
Now the brightness was starting to fade as his eye adjusted to the light, and Bile saw that he was laying on a bed, covered with a sheet. The light from before were several candles along the walls, much smaller than the torches in the palace. The room was made of a dark brown wood, with the faint scent of cedar. And most surprising, was a young boy who was seated by Bile's side. He couldn't see much of the boy, aside from his short charcoal hair, because he seemed to be asleep with his arms and head on Bile's mattress.
"B-boy." Bile managed to wheeze out. This caused the kid to nearly leap out of his seat, and stagger away from him with a confused, shocked expression. Now he could see that the kid was quite young, no older than ten or eleven, with a soft innocent face and muddy eyes, and a plain white undershirt. "Boy, were... were you the one, who rescued me?"
The young boy stepped back again, and shook his head, before he bolted out the open door.
"Wait! W-wait, please." Bile called out, but it hurt his throat just to go that loud. More blood spilled out of his throat, and he was forced onto his back. Why had the kid ran off? Was he scared of him, or going to report back to whoever did rescue him?
A terrified thought reached Bile's mind. What if the boy was some kind of agent of Prateria's? There was little doubt in his mind she'd send someone to ensure he was dead. The final words from her over the radio before she had left him to die, no, tried to murder him with that creature as an unaware agent... it filled him with a kind of hatred he never knew he had. He had never done anything against her or the Emperor! He had let them do as they wanted with him, sweep him aside, chastise him, berate him, and even physically abuse him, and all Bile had ever shown was undying loyalty to them, and this was how he was repaid?
His remaining hand slowly tightened into a fist. To hell with them! If this was some kind of game, he wasn't playing it. If either of them, or some agent they sent came in that door, he was going to kill them or die trying.
A serious of loud, scraping footsteps, followed by a large form looming into the room quickly dispelled any thoughts Bile had. What he had expected was at least something human, but what he got was a monster. The new figure was more than twice Bile's height, and the large jagged horns on its head almost scraped against the already high ceiling. Blackened talons moved like shadows, and the fiend's crimson leathery hide, more like a reptile than anything mammalian, flickered like the flames in the candles. Two large wings were curled around the monster's body, acting like a cloak of sorts that draped behind it. It stood tall and regal like a king, and its burning eyes glared down at the immobile, and utterly helpless Bile.
"So you're awake, human." The beast rumbled. Its very voice was low and menacing, yet seemed to lack any real sense of danger to it. "That is good to see. Serene was afraid your wounds would be too severe, but I'm happy that isn't the case. It's a miracle you're alive right now, considering the wreckage you were found in."
"W-who... w-what are you?" Bile managed to cough out.
The fiend took a step back, and brought a clawed hand up to its chest while it bent low. "Ah, forgive me for my lack of manners. My name is Asphagel, and you can say this is my home... well, mine and that of my two friends. You already met Philip, the kid who was watching over you all night."
Asphagel then stepped forward, and eyed the quivering Bile. "Don't be afraid. I'm not going to hurt you. You seem to be in good enough condition to speak and answer coherently, so forgive me, but I need you to answer a few questions I have for you. After that, you can get back to rest."
