As the sun rose higher and higher into the sky, the streets of Mival around the capital building found themselves host to a large majority of the population. Thousands of people were gathered around the entrance of the capital building, only kept away by barriers and members of the city guard. Cameras were focused on the entrance as well, as the footage was being broadcasted all over Mival. The crowd was restless, and anxious for answers and knowledge of what exactly was happening.
"Is this about the attacks last night?"
"Or did something even worse happen?"
"It has to be big if the entire city is to be alerted."
"That really tall lady back there looks mean. Is she unhappy?"
The woman in question was The Voice, who stood atop of an elevated platform before the crowd. Her eyes scanned through the mass of people and non-humans who were all present, then they shifted to the guards. Micah and CHalodna had returned from their little pool relaxation and stood on standby, their firearms in hand and holstered at their sides. The rest of the guards were all accounted for... except-
"Sorry late!" Doris's voice shouted through the crowd. The Voice raised an eyebrow as the small glasses wearing girl pushed her way through the crowd and leaped over the barrier. She was in her own city guard uniform, and she was clearly out of breath, and her glasses were crooked on her face. "Busy, time lost, lost got-"
"You're here, and that's all that matters." Tama said in a low, hissed tone. "But next time you arrive so unprofessionally, your excuses will have to explain that to The Master. Now, stand by the side. We're ready to begin."
Doris shakily nodded, and ran off to join the rest of the guards. Tama wanted to rub the ridge of her nose, but she had to keep herself looking professional. Any sign of weakness, and any... outside factors within the crowd could take advantage.

"Well... this is packed." Demmy whistled as she squirmed her way through the masses. Beside her, Molly followed, offering quick and honest apologies to everyone they brushed past.
"Do we have to be here?" Molly asked. "Maybe we can go back to the bar and watch from there."
Demmy flashed Molly a sleazy grin. "Weren't you the one concerned about Doris making it here safe and sound? You needed to tell her about that strange woman in the baths, so we came here." She turned her head, and pointed. "I see her right there, crooked glasses and oversized uniform."
Molly squinted, and sure enough, there was Doris. She let out a sigh of relief. She had made it in time.

Tama's eyes scanned to the left and to the right to make sure everything was ready. All cameras were upon her. The mass of the crowd had all eyes upon her. Every ear in Mival, every eye was upon her, or so it felt. All of the guards were also present.
She cleared her throat. "Citizens of Mival, I am the Voice of the Master. The Master, as many of you are aware, and others aren't, has become too ill and weak to speak to the crowds as he once did, so I am his voice and his eyes. I speak on his behalf, and today, I come bearing grave news."
The crowds began to murmur among themselves, but Tama silenced them with a tap of the microphone. "Last night, the demon attack was the worst strike against Mival in over half a century. Long have we known relative peace through the work of our mixed community and the diligent and hard work of our guards. The scope of the attack was unprecedented, and it took all our efforts to close the gateway the demons were using and wipe out their invasion force. In no small part was the outside assistance of guests to Mival an important role, and while the loud voice of one was no doubt heard by everyone in the city..." Her eyes focused through the crowd, and narrowed in on Demmy. The demon in question felt a cold shiver as she realized she had been eyed out, and she felt the alien feeling of wanting to become invisible and hide from the intense glare of the Voice. "There were others as well who contributed, most notably the Lebran Mussurana. Without her efforts and the efforts of others, far more lives would have been taken."
"And yet... we are still not out of the woods." Tama's voice cut off the premature discussion that was beginning. She leaned forward, and took a deep breath. "This morning, three of our guards were found dead. One of them, Plerotini, was on active duty. Two others, Buel and Voss, were retired and off duty. All three were found at dawn, with the only things that remained being bits of skin and their clothes, or in Plerotini's case... bits of fur."
The crowd erupted into an uproar. Tama knew this would happen, yet it was better than keeping silent. Even the guards had broken protocol and were shocked, actively questioning one another and surprised.
"Plerotini... He was the bat, right?"
"Yeah. Nice guy, if not a little creepy. When was the last you saw of him?"
"He went off to help a child. He said he didn't need any help. I should have gone after him..."
"And poor Buel and Voss... They were veterans. They went through thick and thin for years..."
"Kill who, they? Possibly them kill could?"
"Doris, can you talk normally ONCE in your life? This isn't the time to-"
Another tap on the microphone silenced everyone. "Order, please. No, this is not a surviving demon. Based on their actions last night, their protocol is to simply rip their targets to pieces in a messy manner, not leave almost no trace behind. At the time, we have captured one of the instigators of the demon invasion, and the information he gave to us reveals he was working under someone else, someone who is likely the cause of these deaths. Citizens of Mival, I, no, The Master implores you, each and every one of you, to stay safe and remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. If you notice any suspicious behavior, please inform one of the city guards. So long as this murderer and whomever he works with is out there, our city cannot be safe. Every further death of both civilians and our city guards is a tragedy we must avoid at all costs. I beg of you, each and every one of you, don't do anything reckless, and remain safe. Plerotini's murder, and the murders of Buel and Voss... they will be avenged, and their murderers will be brought to justice. This, The Master promises you, all of you!"

As the speech began to wind down, concern and unrest racing through the citizenry of the strong, yet damaged, city of Mival, Fear was evident in the eyes of all those assembled before Tama, paralyzing the crowd in a mixture of defeated anguish and unfettered frustration. Audible murmuring filled the crowd as those assembled finally began to understand the reality of the situation.
However, as if sensing their frustrations, a lone figure stepped out from the crowd. His hair was thin and scraggly, pitch black in color and hung loosely down to his shoulders. His features were thin and narrow, with pronounced cheek bones and a thin pointed chin. The man stepped into the front of the gathered crowd, raising up his hands as if to try and calm them down, before he turned directly to Tama. The man looked deep into Tama's eyes, as if searching deep into her every being.
"Dearest lady, forgive my intrusion," the man said with a quick bow. He raised his voice to a surprising volume, loud enough to carry itself across the gathered crowd. "But I believe some questioning is in order. Is it not curious that this 'invasion' was localized primarily in the poorest section of this glorious city? That those who have already proven to suffer the most here, those who have already been abandoned by the Master's protection, were those so shamefully and unceremoniously swept up in this hellish invasion?"
More murmuring began to spread across the gathered crowd, taking in what the man was saying. Turning away from Tama, the man continued. "Is it not curious that three of the supposed most elite of the guards in our most righteous and prestigious city vanished without a trace in the wake of this invasion? If they had been accounted for after the chaos had ended, surely the Master would have to know the whereabouts of its finest!"
The crowd seemed to become evermore tumultuous, the murmurs quickly beginning to grow into something more dangerous. "Is it not curious how now, in the wake of this unspeakable tragedy, the Master asks more of you for your 'protection'? To sacrifice your lives and to sell out your own brothers and sisters in order to 'save' this city? And is it not curious that now, at the eve of this glorious city's darkest hour, the Master fails to show his face? That as his grasp tightens like a noose around this utopia for unity and brotherhood, as your freedoms and comforts are stripped away from you, the Master hides away in his decadent nest?!"
The crowd quickly became more agitated, its former murmurings quickly growing into vehement shouts and jeers. A smirk appeared briefly on the man's face, before he turned back to Tama, once more peering deep into her soul. "Is it not curious, indeed? What have you to say in the Master's defense?"

As the sneers and jeers of the crowd grew, Molly stepped back in fear. Demmy made sure to have Molly behind her, her one good eye fixated upon the lean man. While she hadn't been in this city long enough to know how authentic his claims were, there was something about him that rubbed her the wrong way. Something uneasy, something wrong.
Up on the platform, Tama watched on as the crowds grew more restless with each word out of the man's mouth. The city guards were on edge, and it looked as if violence was to break out at any moment. Tama's eyes's however, were focused only on the man, and she saw the formation of a smirk on his face. He WANTED this. He WANTED the crowd to be turned against her, against The Master. What was this man's true goal, if he clearly enjoyed this?
"Silence, please. SILENCE." Tama's voice projected over the crowd. The air of authority she carried and the weight of her words acted as a buffer to the waves of anger and resentment, and the crowd was silenced, if only verbally. "The Master has become further and further ill in the past few months, to the point he requires help even leaving his bed. It is for that reason I am his voice. He does not show his face because he does not care, nor because he desires no one to see him, but because he physically cannot. And what he asks of the people of Mival is for their own protection and safety until the killer has been caught. What sacrifice is there to asking people to remain safe in their homes and report any suspicious activity?"
She stood tall, and her own eyes bore daggers into the man's own. She felt the weight of his stare upon her, and likely he did hers. " Whoever instigated the demonic invasion knew what they were doing when they prepared that portal in the poorest section of the city. Yet, were it the Master's own doing, why send help at all? Why would he, were this an attempt to clear out the poor, try to send in help well before the entire section was cleared out? The response to the demonic invasion was swift to minimize casualties, which goes against any supposed idea to wipe them out. Mival's resources are finite, dependent on trade from neighboring cities. In turbulent times as these, it is the poor that struggle the most, regardless of efforts to alleviate that. And yet despite that, all personnel were mobilized to help contain and stop the demonic outbreak once it became known."
"And finally..." Tama tapped her finger across the microphone. "Many of our city guard operate mostly autonomously. While they are part of the city guard, they move around the city mostly by themselves or with a partner. While some may have... unscrupulous methods of operation..." Here, she gazed over at Doris, who withered under her gaze, and at Chalodna, who did her best to ignore the death glare that Tama gave her, "all still operate to the betterment of the city under heavy scrutiny when employed. The two who were retired were unaccounted for, while according to reports, Plerotini was last seen heading to help a child. Likely, he was caught in a trap by the one who murdered the other two."
She cleared her throat. "I understand the circumstances around this tragedy may seem unusual to many, and I understand your grievances and annoyances, but I also ask that you keep a clear mind not clouded by conspiracy or outside influences. Violence and riots will only create further turmoil, which the instigator of these murders desires."

Many kilometers away from the gathering, a duo of women entered into the lobby of Mival's bathhouse, their long hair still damp from the hot water they had enjoyed the previous hour.
Kyra was the first to hear the voice carrying over from the TV hanging from the wall in a corner of the lobby. The elderly woman behind the counter – Sulis – was already watching. The camera was currently focused on the the Master's Voice, Tama, but the words she could hear came from a man in the crowd.
After glancing back to the changing rooms to confirm they might need to wait for Baerbel and Cipo a little longer, Kyra found a bench and sat down to watch the TV, patting the cushion beside her in an invitation to Vesyka. They watched together for a few silent minutes.
"The Master has become further and further ill in the past few months," said the advisor on the TV, in response to the man's claims. "To the point he requires help even leaving his bed. It is for that reason I am his voice. He does not show his face because he does not care, nor because he desires no one to see him, but because he physically cannot."
Kyra rolled her eyes. "I hope she doesn't expect people to swallow that. If this guy really exists then there's no way to confirm she's following his wishes. Having some unseen leader is a real fucking invite to corruption."
She signed. "Then again, with a name like 'The Master', I seriously fucking doubt he's putting the people's best interests first."
Vesyka nodded quietly beside Kyra, but looked towards the counter. "Sulis, you have known Mival for much longer than we have. What do you think about all this?"

Sulis, who had been shifting through papers behind the counter, looked up at Kyra. "Mival has been through many things the past several years, but this last year has been its roughest yet in my memory. The Master, Morfan, was a wild and reckless man even in his aging years. He was a big game hunter, who traveled across Lemuria to hunt the biggest, baddest creatures he could. His room is decorated with the trophies and images of his hunts and travels, of meeting many different people like the Lebrans and Borans and the Fae. He even claimed he went into a forest where time and space distort and was lost in there for five months before he came back. No one believed him, since no one who went out to verify if such a forest exists came back..."
Her wrinkled face dropped, and her eyes narrowed. "He was also a double faced man. When he appeared in public he was seen as a wild, if pleasant man to be around, but I've heard from those who used to work under him he is paranoid and spiteful. He would beat those who didn't do exactly as he said, and would torture and cut them for disobeying him or putting him in a bad mood. No one dared say no to him, especially when he became the city's leader. That's when he took up the title of The Master, as he was the one in charge. But..."
Sulis raised a weary hand to her chin. "But then about a year ago, everything just... changed. He appeared less and less, and that woman, The Voice... she appeared in his place, as his mouthpiece. He's come here a few times, but I have never seen him without her. And the last time I've seen him, he was a far cry from the man I knew even five years back. He is almost a vegetable now, forgetting people and faces and unable to move himself. The Voice, however, she won't let anyone touch him, out of fear it will be what kills him. If there is corruption in high places, then I guess you can say it really is The Voice the one calling all the shots. While laws have been laxed, there have also been more accidents and outside dilemnas over the past year than in the prior fifty. Wherever that is rotten luck on her part, or her doing, I cannot give an answer. Everything else she says is correct though."

Though the man's expression seemed to fall, internally, he felt nothing but joy. The fool, she had walked right into his hands. Typical of those with power to be incapable of keeping their mouths shut, even in the face of crisis. it made it only easier to manipulate weak-minded rabble to his side.
"How unfortunate to hear of the Master's ailing condition," the man said, pressing a hand against his chest. "And yet, ever so more curious. The Master is ill, and yet so few of his loyal citizenry were allowed to know this? Was it so apt for you, his ever so loyal mouthpiece, to keep such information away from the prying eyes of its people? Perhaps, there is more to what is going on than you would like to let on? After all, you seemed so quick to make an ironclad defense of such a suspicious occurrence..."
The man paced about briefly, before turning to the crowd. "And even more so curious, that you would so openly admit to the flaws of your guard. You know of their folly and drawbacks, and yet you do nothing to prevent them? You offer no solution to this blatant misuse of authority?" This time, he addressed the crowd, rather than Tama. "Does this not seem ripe for corruption and abuse, brothers and sisters? Is the writing not on the wall for the truth? Believe me, my brothers and sisters, there is more to this situation than meets the eye! Do not fall into the honeyed words of this official, for she is not your solution; nay, she is your problem!"
The crowd began to roar back to life, a tumultuous thunder rolling across the assembly. Vehemence and anger spread like a plague through the masses, directing itself towards Tama and those assembled on-stage. The man quickly turned back towards Tama, expression filled with similar vehemence. He pointed an accusatory finger at Tama. "WHAT SAY YOU?!"

The wrath of the crowd, the accusations of the man, it all crashed upon Tama as a wave of negativity and hostility. She tried to stand tall against it, to formulate some form of defense in her mind, but the man had exploited a fatal flaw in her defenses. The guards holding autonomy was something no one had really batted an eye to, and something she herself had never felt the need to explain. It simply WAS, and up until now it had not caused much in the way of issues. Yet now with this man's accusations that such a system was ripe for corruption and abuse, that somehow it painted her as the instigator of what had happened, words failed her. The guards who stood by her looked among each other and at Tama, curious and uncertain as to what to do. Violence was about to break out, and the last thing Tama needed was for things to surge into an uncrontrolled riot that would only fuel the man's interests. She needed something, an answer, something to stem what this man was doing...
"Is it really so wrong to let the guards have a long leash? That kinda sounds like the opposite of someone being a tyrannical dictator."
The voice had come from the one eyed demon, Demmy. The crowd turned to look at her, as her voice was immediately recognized.Beside her, Molly gave a quiet gasp and tried to slink away, but Demmy wrapped an arm around the girl to keep her close by. Her one good eye scoured through the crowd, before it rested on the lean man. They had heard the booming declaration that had swept over the city during the invasion, and the girl with an eyepatch was the one responsible. The crowd backed away from her in uncertainty, but Demmy sighed. "I'm not here to stir up trouble, otherwise there would be nothing any of you could do. I am here on good behavior, with no interest in making a scene, unlike someone here."
She walked forward, and with Molly in tow despite her quiet objections, she stopped just short of the platform and turned around to fully face the crowd. "Now, before any of you ask, no I'm not friends with Mrs. Mouthpiece here. She barely tolerates me, and I can tell she's seven different shades of shady." She ignored the death glare that came from Tama, and continued, "However, I was allowed to go in and see The Master of this city last night, thanks to my efforts in helping to stop the attack that occurred. Just like she said, he's a sick and ill piece of work, but I assume the reason for the hush hush is to keep too many people from coming in and bothering him. I know a thing or two about people in high places, and when they ain't doing well, they like to barricade themselves in. And I could tell from how she was acting around The Master that Mrs. Mouthpiece here has nothing but respect and care for him. Undermining his work is not something I see her doing, even if again, she's seven different shades of shady."
"D-demmy, Can I plea-"
"Now, I've been watching this little witch hunt going on, and I've noticed you seem to be getting a lot of enjoyment from roasting Mrs. Mouthpiece here." Demmy pointed a finger over at the man, and her one good eye narrowed. "Actually, you seem to came in here even more prepared to tear her down than she was to defend herself, like you've been waiting to do this for some time. If she's seven different shades of shady, you are the full fifty. But what do I know? I'm just a lowly demon lord who works at the Violet Bar for Wisma. I'm sure whatever your credentials are surely outweigh mine..."
The guards on the platform watched, but especially Doris, who Molly couldn't help but notice was especially on edge, as if she was waiting to jump in should things turn sour and she found herself in trouble. Tama herself was also on edge, yet unlike the loaded rifle ready to fire that was Doris, she was a statue, unmoving and unflinching, her expression unreadable...

The face of the man seemed to fall into one of neutrality as Demmy spoke, absorbing her words in a sort of serenity. He could hardly believe it - this woman had practically played another card directly into his hand. Was this really so easy? Were these fools so quick to divulge weapons for him to use? No... there had to be some sort of catch, a trickery that he was missing. He could not afford to dive headfirst into this to avoid becoming trapped. Nevertheless, there was enough here on the surface for the thin figure to make use of before letting his words simmer in the hearts of the crowd.
"I am merely here to defend the interests of the people, madam," the thin figure replied calmly, offering Demmy and Molly an amicable bow. "Or would you prefer to be known as a fiend, much like the horrors that afflicted this glorious city? I have watched here among its commonfolk as the city's issues bubbled forth, like a fetid corpse from the depths of a river. Its sickness had been hidden well by those in charge, but it was inevitable for it to exhibit symptoms for all to see."
The man took a step back, closing closer to the crowd, quickly turning to look at the crowd. "But it is not my duty to judge for this glorious city's people if its ruler is worthy of his position; nay, it is duty of its citizenry to come to this decision! It is only fair for the will of the people to decide the fate of this city and the course those in power shall be made to walk."
The man turned back to Demmy, eyes narrowed and focused. "I have made my piece. What the future holds now is out of either of our hands."
With a final bow, the man stepped back into the crowd, quickly disappearing from sight as fast as he had appeared...

As the man vanished back into the crowd, Tama let out a long, pained sigh. "Thank you", her mouth muttered and the words reached Demmy's ears, and Demmy's alone. Yet, before the demon could turn, Tama cleared her throat. " Yes, this city is not a perfect paradise. Yes, it holds many problems and woes. Neither I nor the Master are perfect beings, nor do we pretend to be. We do not know everything, we are only human. And humans make mistakes. While I will defend The Master's choices and my own actions, I know that what I do is not perfect. And our city guards know that as well. None of them are. But each of them does what they can to help this city, to improve and better the lives of everyone involved. That is what Buel, Voss, and Plerotini wanted, to help out those in need and improve this city. Every citizen in Mival is important, each one an irreplaceable and unique cog in a great machine. Many of you might despise me, maybe from before this, maybe because of this, but please, know that everything I do, everything The Master desires, is deep down what we truly want for this city, and we will try our damnedest to keep this city, and its people, safe. In the end, that is all I have to say. This announcement is adjourned, and please, stay safe if your homes and report any suspicious activity."
With this final statement, and the unease of the crowd which had begun to build up with the man's departure, The Voice of The Master turned and walked off the stage. The cameras turned off, and the guards moved up and began to tell people it was fine to leave in a peaceful manner.
"Well... that was unexpected." Demmy muttered as she let Molly go.
"What do you mean? The crowd getting so worked up or-"
"Yes, but also that man leaving so fast..." Demmy's one eye had been fixated on the man the whole time, but with the movement and unrest of the crowd, she had lost him. "And I doubt he's done making his piece on everything going on here-"
"Molly! Demmy!" Doris's voice reached the two of them. The girl in question launched herself off the platform and toward a confused and terrified Molly, and it was only Demmy's last second intervention with catching her that saved Molly from being tackled to the ground. "Watch announcement entire yes, did? Everything see, yes? Not come only in Voice save from?"
"Yeah... we watched it all." Demmy set her down, then rested an elbow ontop of Doris's head. "Not quite what you were expecting, right?"
"No, it wasn't." Micah stepped down from the platform, with Chalodna beside her. "We knew what happened last night would set people on edge... but not to this degree."
"It's so irritating!" Chalodna grumbled through gritted teeth. "Like you said Demmy, Tama is kinda sketchy, but not THAT sketchy. And who the fuck was that guy? I've never seen him before..."
Micah shook her head. "Neither have I. Not at the library or elsewhere. He doesn't seem to be a resident of the city..."
"A-actually, that reminds me." Molly piqued up. "Um, Doris, the reason we came here was to see if you heard the announcement. I chased after you to the showers, and ran into a really tall woman with a lot of red hair. She, she kinda had your accent but didn't speak like you."
Doris raised an eyebrow. "Me like? Tall head red very? What say she?"
"Well, she said you heard the announcement and went running, but she also told me... well, she said that Micah... Micah was dangerous to be around... and somehow she knew my name."
Micah's face darkened. The blonde haired city guard's eyebrows furrowed as she focused on Molly. "Any details about this woman you can give me? If she's spreading ill news of me, then perhaps she and this man are in cahoots."
"Unlikely!" Doris snapped. "No filth monger work one him with! Evil reek he!"
"She, she was really tall, three feet higher than me." Molly said. "Very well muscled, she was dripping with water as if she had been in the baths, but... I never saw her in there, and she had blood red eyes and a fang."
"Now that screams not human to me." Demmy said, which got a nod from Chalodna and Micah. "Unnaturally tall, and blood red eyes and fangs. At least I actually look like a normal human as I am. She should stick out like a sore thumb."
"That she should." Micah nodded in agreement. "We'll head back to our office and see if we cannot find her and that man in the database. If we've seen them before and have records, then there's a possibility they are there... Still, this all reeks too much to be a coincidence. Unish reappearing, the demonic invasion, a super tall woman , the deaths of three of our comrades and now this man trying to cause trouble? Something's going on, and I don't like it."
"Neither do I, sister." Chalodna wrapped an arm around Micah's shoulder as they went off. " Goddamn, that guy pisses me off just looking at him. I need a beer or two to forget his face. A beer in Plerotini's name, and a beer to Buel and Voss!"
"That's the last thing you should be doing, Chalodna. And no, a beer is not what they'd want to be remembered by."
"But I want a beer!"
Static noise cut off the two's departure from the area. "Testing, testing? Is this still on?" A voice came from the platform.
All eyes, even those who had been leaving, turned to look back to where Tama had been. It was not her who was back up there, but instead two people. One was a young man with fair skin and short hair, and the other was a girl of around the same age, if not a head taller, with golden brown hair tied up to the side in a pony tail and pale blue eyes. Molly could hear the crowd around her begin to mutter and question. What was this? Was not the announcement over? Was this another attempt from The Voice to deflect away from what had been heaped on her?
"This is not a formal announcement from the city, but rather something we of the Lacister Hotel wish to request." The girl said. The cameras that had been turned off flashed back on, and she gave a gentle smile. "After what happened last night, there are many who are without homes, without food or shelter. The attack left many in a state of dissaray, and there's too many for the city proper to take care of. That is why tonight, an hour before dusk, we will be preparing food and shelter for those in need. There will be enough prepared for over a thousand people, and room for just as many. Until the homes and businesses destroyed are rebuilt, our hotel can act as a haven for those who need it."
That caught the audience's attention. Indeed, there were many within the crowd who had lost their homes to what had transpired, and many more without food or water. What they heard was a godsend for them, something too good to be true...
"Everyone is invited, but those in need are to be given priority treatment." The boy declared. "If you wish to come early for a place to rest, it is on the house. We will do everything we can to help you out, we promise that."
A ways from the platform, Tama had been preparing to enter back into the capital building, when the announcement reached her ears. She turned in confusion. She... She had no knowledge of this? No one had informed her, or requested such to happen. Was this, another scheme of that man to undercut her authority?
