None alive? Had this... Storm Lord killed humans before? Right here? The whistle around his neck suddenly grew heavy.
"U... U- Uh... w- well... with Lemuria being how it is... t... there are a v- variety of people here. Some are still like that."

"Really now?" The dragon rumbled. "That's quite interesting, human. Perhaps I should go and see."
His head arched upward. "But now, I have questions for you. Do not worry, I won't kill you, but if I feel you are lying then I might have a little fun." The fiend chuckled. "Your name, human. What is your name, and that of the person you trust most in this world."

Alex's voice left him for a moment. Why did he want names? Did he want full names? How would he be able to tell if it was a lie? Could he wrongly assume he was lying?
The weight of the whistle begged him to relieve his neck of it and lift it to his lips. But the questions came again like a waterfall: would Pless arrive in time? Could he hurt her? Or even kill her?
After what felt like an eternity, he spoke.
"A... Alexander Hana Salman. An- And... Samantha Athina MacCleary."
He hoped he had made the right decision.

The eyes of the Storm Lord narrowed into satisfied slits, and a deep grumble escaped its closed jaws. "Very good. My hearing of your heart beat assumes you aren't lying. That's a good human. Otherwise, I wonder what would happen if I made your blood run in reverse."
The dragon's head lowered a bit, and it lowered its stance to one more akin to a sphinx statue, only with its front arms crossed over. "Second to last question from me... What is your line of work specifically, and is there anyone in this world that shares your beliefs in your line of work, Alexander?"

"I... I study m-... giant creatures. C- Creatures that some people fear can't exist along mankind. I... I try to find ways they can. A... And..."
Suddenly, he went from thinking of one blonde to another, and part of his heart cried of betrayal.
"Yes. There is someone else who feels the same way."

Once more, the sickeningly human smirk on the dragon's face etched wide. "Good to hear. What is their name, the name of this other who believes in your cause? After this, I have but a final few questions to ask, then I will let you go, Alexander."

"M... Molly... Molly Chance," he answered, remembering what had been printed on the name tag of her uniform.

The Storm Lord nodded. "Lovely little name. I'll have to remember that for later. Now, the final questions..."
The frontmost right wing raised up, and the eye under it focused on the whistle. "That device around your neck... What is it, and what is it's purpose? And lastly... WHY do you study creatures like me? What redefined rules does a creature like me create in the understanding of mortal life?"

"It... It's a whistle. I- It makes a... a shrill noise. For getting a... attention and... and..."
Alex felt his heart begin to beat harder, and recalled the dragon's words about hearing it.
"A... And I brought it because I trained a monster to respond to it. In case I got in trouble. As... As for why I do it... it's... it's because you do change the rules. You... expand what we have to consider life. And I... I want to understand that, b... but others don't. They're angry or... or afraid and want to wipe y- monsters out. A- And that's... I don't want that. I want those can be cohabited with to be preserved and studied and... and understood. S... So... that's why I do it..."

All while Alex had been getting his explanation out, the Storm Lord had moved in closer and closer to the young man, until there was only a couple dozen meters between them. The beast's visage covered Alex's vision, and the massive, sinister smirk on its face. Time seemed to slow, and the seconds dragged for an unbearable eternity.
"Very interesting, both your whistle, and your conviction." The voice of the dragon rumbled through Alex's mind. "You really are a unique specimen among your kind. Most mortals fear what they do not understand, and refuse to understand what they know to be dangerous to them. To even go so far as to turn a great creature, a monster like I am, into a powerful ally with but a blow of that instrument... Impressive!"
The Storm Lord arched back, and his maw opened wide for loud booming laughter to shake the ravine and surrounding lands. "I would ask for a demonstration of your whistle, but it's clear from your face you would rather be away now, and I need resting. Alexander, you are free to go whenever you wish."

"I... u- uh... th- ... thank you for your time," Alex stammered as he began to back away.
He resisted simply running away and paced his retreat. He did not want to offend, or worse: trigger a predatory response. The dragon seemed rather catlike. He did not want to test if it would chase small, quickly moving objects.
Once he was sure he was too far away to detect though, Alex broke into a sprint.
Sam was right.
He really was an idiot.

As Alex ran as fast as he could from the Storm Lord, the dragon backed itself again into its cave, and laid its head down against the ground. It swings as well lowered down to the ground, and as it drifted back into its nap like state, the smirk on its face never left.
Humans... what a fucking interesting race they had become.
